Even though Nick and I were twins, he had always seen himself as my big brother and protector. I smiled to myself. It used to bother me, but now I just enjoyed it. Except when he crossed the line into nagging. “I will. Don’t worry!”

I managed to get a spot on the street quite close to Nick’s apartment. He had moved in with his girlfriend, Lia, a while ago, and they had a unique old flat above the venerable Belvedere Club. The Belvedere had been a glamorous watering hole back in the days of rum-running and torch singers. It had lost none of its mystique over the years, and even the younger crowd patronized the place for its live music and retro ambience - leather banquettes, romantic lighting, and signature cocktails.

I had to admit, a pang of trepidation washed over me as I pulled open the heavy glass door that led to the upstairs apartment. This very spot was where the body of Warren Quick had been found. I knew we were working the case as best we could, and Dai Le had given me a bit of valuable information, but the killings of Quick and Allenby were still on the unsolved list. And the killer might have already lined up a new victim.

The inspector was right. We needed to get things moving.

As I climbed the creaky stairs, I told myself to focus. I was on a mission. I had to keep my mind on the big picture tonight.

Nick welcomed me with a grin and, as we walked together into the apartment, I caught a glimpse of us both in a large gilt-framed mirror on the living room wall. Although we weren’t biologically identical twins, the resemblance never failed to surprise me. Yes, Nick was a little taller, but we had the same slim build, angular faces, and wavy brown hair. And dark eyes that could glimmer with light or shut off the world.

I looked around. “Is Lia home?”

“No. She’s working this month.” Lia was a dancer who performed in the glitzy stage shows presented on large cruise ships. She loved her globe-trotting lifestyle, and she and Nick had settled into a comfortable partnership.

To my surprise, it was Missy McLaren who walked out of the kitchen with a platter of hors d’oeuvres. She set it on the coffee table and went back for a couple of bottles of wine and glasses. That gave me a few minutes to wonder if my proposition for Nick could be discussed in her presence. I decided it would be fine.

I sipped on some chilled white wine and eyed the crispy samosas and other tasty-looking mouthfuls. “You realize I might be eating most of these, right?”

“Go ahead,” she replied.

“Thanks so much.” I chose to deal with her recent show first. “That was a pretty powerful episode this afternoon.”

“Those people annoyed me.”

“I hope you’re being careful. It’s more than an online battle of words. They know you in real life.”

“They’re crazy.”

“That’s my point.”

She nodded. “Yeah. I know.
